Daskaea's Toast

This co-worker of mine said to me about the whole Penn State/Sandusky child molestation situation: “I really think that that man raped all those boys because of the homoeroticism in football and the repressed homosexuality of football players and coaches.” I could not believe what I was hearing (from a social worker, no less). I responded, “Almost all pedophiles are heterosexual. When they have sex with adults, it is most often with women. Pedophilia is not about homosexuality. Pedophiles choose boys because it is easier to victimize boys, for many different reasons. Studies show that most pedophiles who molest non-relative boys do so because they actually would feel too guilty about molesting little girls. Men who rape girls not related to them tend to be more disturbed and even psychotic. And incest is another matter all together.” Ugh so awkward. There still continues to be the faulty connection made between homosexuality and pedophilia, even among mental health professionals. And it always feels so personal for me. It’s like if they know I like men, I feel viewed suspiciously with regard to children.
